Forum Ground Rules
Our shared space for student voice and change
1. Everyone’s welcome, everyone’s heard
- Any student can attend, speak, and vote — this is your space.
- Give others space to talk. If you’ve spoken once, hold back and let others in.
2. Respect and kindness first
- Listen to understand, not just to reply.
- Speak to ideas, not people — no personal attacks or interruptions.
- Keep language inclusive and considerate.
3. One voice at a time
- Raise your hand (or use the digital hand online) if you’d like to contribute.
- The Chair will guide who speaks next to make sure all voices are balanced.
4. Debate, don’t dominate
- It’s okay to disagree — just keep it constructive.
- Stay open-minded; others’ experiences may be different from yours.
5. Stay on topic
- Keep comments relevant to the proposal or agenda item.
- Side discussions can be taken to breakout groups or after the meeting.
6. Be mindful of accessibility
- Avoid jargon or acronyms — explain things clearly.
- The Vice Chair will monitor the online chat and accessibility in hybrid spaces.
7. Decisions are collective
- Votes are made by a simple show of hands or digital vote.
- Once voted, the proposal becomes an SU position or priority — and the Executive Committee takes it forward.
8. Keep it transparent
- Minutes will be published online, and updates shared at the next Forum.
- Ask questions if something isn’t clear — this is your democracy.
9. Zero tolerance for discrimination or harassment
- Forum should feel safe and inclusive for all.
- The Chair may pause or stop discussion if conduct breaches SU values.

Who is running the event?
This event is being organised by the Democracy and Engagement Coordinator Caitlin Ridgway, Forum Facilitators, SU Crew and Student Presidents from The SU. Our Meet the Team page includes information about every member of The SU team.
If you need a buddy to support you with arriving at the event, please email The SU on info@thesu.org.uk and we will work out what we can arrange to help. This might be someone meeting you before the event start time or simply talking you through more details of what to expect. We want to help you access our events so let us know what you need.
Where is the event taking place?
The Penryn event is taking place in DDM Seminar M, Penryn Campus. This is in the centre of the campus on the top floor above the Stannary. Follow the large footpath arounf the frint of the Stannary and up the hill to enter the Upper Stannary from the back entrance. After entering the glass doors, go through the double doors on your immediate left and take the stairs or lift to the top floor. Here you will see DDM Seminar M signposted clearly. Follow the corridor along until you have reached the labelled door. You can also make it by entering the Stannary via the front step-free access and walking through the building. The Falmouth event is taking place in Lecture Theatre 1, Woodlane/Falmouth Campus. When entering Falmouth Campus via the Fox Lane entrance, continue walking up the path past the Centre for Communication and Fox Cafe. Continue up the path past the Rosehill gardens until the path veers to the right. Lecture Theatre 1 will be in the first large building you see on your right.
