The Priority: Providing students with the opportunity for free soup on a Friday.

Context: This priority came about in response to the cost-of-living crisis and allows all students to access fresh healthy food on a Friday, FOR FREE. Free Soup Friday is a great way to get students together and gives you guys an opportunity to keep in contact with us officers. This year we have moved Free Soup Fridays to the Upper Stannary and the soup is now cooked by the Stannary catering team and served by us. There is a different soup each week and it is always vegan and gluten-free!

What we’ve achieved

Key Outcomes:

  • We have run 3 Free Soup Fridays so far.
  • We have received lots of great feedback from students.
  • Had successful conversations with the catering team to increase the volume of soup made each week.

By the Numbers: We have served 212 cups of soup since the start of term!

Why this matters

Free Soup Friday is the perfect forum for you to stay in contact with us Sabbatical Officers. We are there every week from 1pm for you to ask us anything. Over the last 3 weeks we have been able to talk to so many of you and get feedback on all areas of university life from societies to student friendships, all whilst handing out on average 70 cups of soup a week!

What’s next?

Immediate Next Steps:

  • Serve more cups of soup a week. Our last soup was able to serve over 15 more students!
  • Ask students more specific questions each week.

Accountability Check: Updates on these actions will be shared on 18/12/2026
