I propose implementing a strategy to ensure online students are prioritised. Whilst an 'online' filter exists for the events page, it is often empty, showing we remain an afterthought. I propose a dedicated online student rep, a consistent schedule of events for online students, an online student mailing list, and the proactive inclusion of virtual societies.
Why is it relevant to Falmouth & Exeter students?
Distance learners make a significant financial investment in their degrees, but are often excluded from the networking and collaborating that campus culture provides to on-campus students. As online courses grow, the SU must evolve to support the specific networking needs of students who aren't physically on campus.
What positive impact would it have?
It will foster a sense of belonging and equity. A dedicated Rep ensures our challenges are considered in SU decision-making. Populating the virtual event calendar will provide the professional networking opportunities that distance students currently lack.
Feedback
Thank you for submitting this proposal and opening up discussion on online student experience! The SU currently sends an online student-specific newsletter and has academic reps for online courses which feed into our representative structures. From reading the proposal and supportive comments, there are clear areas where online students feel inclusion could be improved. You can also reach out to the SU Presidents directly about this - their contact details are on the 'Meet the Team' page. - CR
