Angela Murray: 9:58am on 24 Sep 24 While wearing a cap and gown is something I would want to do for myself personally, I completely agree that it is not for everyone and students shouldn’t be made to feel uncomfortable if they can’t afford or don’t wish to wear a cap and gown. Students should be allowed to celebrate this huge achievement with their peers. Although the cap and gown follows a long tradition that a lot of people wish to uphold, universities need to be more flexible in their approach to this event and support the students who wish to decline the cap and gown.
Lisa Evans: 12:15am on 5 Oct 24 We're not seeking to take anything away from students that want the tradition for themselves, that should continue. But we want to open up the graduation ceremony to also include those for whom the cap and gown is too much of a barrier. These students deserve to celebrate their achievements too.
