Wearing a cap and gown to walk at graduation should be optional not compulsory

    Rejected
Many students want to wear a cap and gown and that option should always remain available to them. However is is unjust to exclude students from graduation who are not able to wear one due to cost issues, sensory issues, disabilities, health, or any other reason at all.

Why is it relevant to Falmouth & Exeter students?

The university should be more inclusive and doing everything it can to make all students feel comfortable and welcome.

What positive impact would it have?

Students who may not otherwise have been able to attend due to the requirement will be able to walk with their cohort and celebrate their achievements.

9:58am on 24 Sep 24 While wearing a cap and gown is something I would want to do for myself personally, I completely agree that it is not for everyone and students shouldn’t be made to feel uncomfortable if they can’t afford or don’t wish to wear a cap and gown. Students should be allowed to celebrate this huge achievement with their peers. Although the cap and gown follows a long tradition that a lot of people wish to uphold, universities need to be more flexible in their approach to this event and support the students who wish to decline the cap and gown.

12:15am on 5 Oct 24 We're not seeking to take anything away from students that want the tradition for themselves, that should continue. But we want to open up the graduation ceremony to also include those for whom the cap and gown is too much of a barrier. These students deserve to celebrate their achievements too.
