Lets put a stop to Generative A.I

    Current
In regards to a reoccurring issue that has come to my attention recently. Throughout my time at Falmouth I've noticed a large increase in the promotion and encouragement of Gen-A.I use across all courses. I believe that we need to open up a conversation around A.I and its consequences, not just 'positives' - and putting a stop to its wide use. A.I does not have a place in an arts university, when A.I software is trained on STEALING artwork.

Why is it relevant to Falmouth & Exeter students?

I have created a petition myself, "CALLING FOR FAL/EXE UNI TO BAN USE OF GENERATIVE A.I" which has garnered more than 900 names across both campuses and multiple courses. I believe that at an arts university, generative A.I is a harmful tool that should NOT be encouraged among students. My instagram account for my campaign @stopai_fxu has garnered more than 800 followers. We are the new generation of artists, which overwhelmingly want to deny gen-A.I and want to create art ourselves. A.I is a new tool that we need to control it's usage of, and openly consider its harms. I believe Falmouths A.I policy is weak, allowing the personal beliefs of lecturers take control over the way they want their students to work - when students DON'T WANT A.I. A.I is a wide issue causing many harmful consequences not just in the arts space - A.I and child pornography: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/mar/24/ai-generated-child-sexual-abuse-videos-images-online-surged-2025-internet-watch-foundation A.I propaganda: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/mar/28/military-deepfakes-ai-propaganda-money A.I stealing artwork: https://goodlawproject.org/ai-giants-are-stealing-our-creative-work/ A.I causing mental problems: https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/urban-survival/202507/the-emerging-problem-of-ai-psychosis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_linked_to_chatbots A.I and incorrect information: https://lib.guides.umd.edu/c.php?g=1340355&p=9880574

What positive impact would it have?

Students have felt very negative from the use of A.I and the encouragement, with many students unhappy with how their lecturers, and courses, are handling the new technology. A stop or reducing A.I's presence in Falmouth Uni will give it's students confidence in the institute, and feel more cared for by the institution when A.I is becoming artists' enemy. Students should be finding information themselves, that is from correct sources and not funneled through an A.I bot that can be incorrect. Students can be negatively effected mentally through excessive usage Here are some quotes from students that I took from a survey, when asked how they felt about their courses encouragement on A.I "It feels like we are paying for a degree/course only to be told that we can cheat ? It’s very unprofessional to encourage and allow students to use AI to do their critical thinking when that’s the whole process of being creative. The university heavily contradicts itself when portraying a ‘creative’ university however it uses AI which is extremely harmful to the environment and takes away our own human creativity." "As a concept artist it makes me feel betrayed, and also feels like I’ve wasted my money at university as I’m paying £9-10k/yr for a lecturer to make half-baked AI prompts for my assignment briefs. (Thankfully there was a huge outcry in concept art, and the AI use has ceased, but that same lecturer is still trying to encourage the use of AI)" "It makes me feel like they aren’t aware of the environmental impact or just don’t care. Which makes no sense as the uni is meant to be so green. It also feels like it degrades the time and effort I and my coursemates put into our creative work." How does Make A Change work?

    Submit a proposal

When you submit your idea, you'll need to make sure that it answers a few key questions:

    • What is your idea?
    • Why is it relevant to students?
    • What positive impact would this idea have?

    Example Idea

Cash should be accepted as payment across campus Campus shops and catering outlets should accept cash as payment. Cash is still an accepted form of payment across the local area and is widely used for individuals in the service sector, with many international students relying on cash when they first move to the UK. The use of cash would make it more accessible for students access the outlets on campus, ensuring that they have access to food and drink throughout the days when they are on campus.

    Get student backing

Other students can ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ your idea and leave comments. Your proposal needs at least 10 likes and 10 more likes than dislikes within six weeks to move forward.

    Reviewed by the Executive Committee

If your idea reaches the threshold, it goes to the Executive Committee (SU Presidents + Forum Facilitators), for review. The three proposals with the most student backing go to the next Student Forum for discussion and voting.

What happens to my proposal at Forum?

At Forum, you will be able to present your idea and students can discuss and vote on the next course of action for your idea. They may:

If your idea reaches Forum, you can present it. Students will then discuss and decide whether to:

    • Pass the idea as a Union Prioirty or an Agreed Action
    • Reject it
    • Request more information before deciding

If passed, the Executive Committee will assign a lead and work with students to make it happen.

Union Priorities vs Agreed Actions: What’s the Difference?

    Union Priorities (Tier 1)
These are the top six ideas chosen by students at Forum that the SU will focus on right now. They get dedicated officer time, campaign resources, and regular updates so you can see progress. Think of them as the main headline issues.

    Agreed Actions (Tier 2)
These are ideas approved by students that the SU officially supports and will work towards when possible, but they aren’t in the current top six. They may be progressed alongside other work, raised in relevant meetings, or picked up as capacity allows. Think of them as on the list, but not the main focus this term.

    Why use Make a Change?

Because it works. Past ideas have led to:

    • Better study spaces for neurodiverse students
    • Sustainable travel initiatives
    • Inclusive campus facilities

Your voice really can – and will – make a change.
