Moving to Cornwall Checklist: Everything You Need Before Starting University

Welcome

Moving to Cornwall Checklist: Everything You Need Before Starting University

Moving to university is a big deal wherever you're headed, but moving to Cornwall comes with a few things you might not have thought about. Whether you're travelling from the other side of the country or just a few counties away, a little preparation can make settling in much easier.

Here's your ultimate moving to Cornwall checklist before Welcome Week begins.

Pack for every season (sometimes in the same day)

Cornwall has a reputation for beautiful beaches and sunny days (and they're definitely part of the experience) but the weather changes quickly, so don't only pack summer clothes.

Make sure you've got:

  • A waterproof coat

  • Warm jumpers and hoodies

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Clothes for sunny days

  • A small umbrella (even if the wind wins sometimes)

You'll probably wear layers more than anything else.

Don't overpack your room

It's tempting to bring everything you own, but student accommodation is usually smaller than you think.

Stick to the essentials:

  • Bedding and towels

  • Toiletries

  • Chargers and extension leads

  • Kitchen equipment (check what your accommodation already provides)

  • A few decorations to make your room feel like home

If you forget something, don't panic. You can always pick things up once you've arrived.

Download the apps you'll actually use

Before you arrive, it's worth downloading a few apps that will make life much easier.

These might include:

  • Bus and train apps (Transport for Cornwall, trainline, beryl)

  • Food delivery services

  • Your university app

  • Banking and budgeting apps

Getting everything set up early saves time once Welcome Week gets busy.

Plan your journey

Cornwall is a little further away than many university destinations, so think ahead about how you're getting here.

Check:

  • Train times if you're travelling by rail

  • Parking arrangements if someone is driving you

  • What time you can move into your accommodation

  • How much luggage you can realistically bring

If you're travelling a long distance, snacks and a phone charger are absolute essentials.

Budget before you arrive

Living independently can be exciting, but costs add up quickly.

Before you move, work out a rough weekly budget for:

  • Food

  • Transport

  • Social activities

  • Laundry

  • Course materials

Having a plan doesn't mean you can't enjoy Welcome Week, it just helps avoid running out of money halfway through September.

Explore beyond campus

One of the best things about studying in Cornwall is everything that's right on your doorstep.

Once you've settled in, make time to explore:

  • Beaches

  • Coastal walks

  • Independent cafés

  • Local markets

  • Nearby towns and villages

Some of the best university memories happen away from lectures.

Get involved

It can feel daunting meeting new people, especially if you've moved a long way from home. The easiest way to settle in is by saying yes to opportunities.

Go to Welcome events, join a society, try a sports club or volunteer with the Students' Union. You don't have to find your people on day one, but putting yourself out there gives you the best chance.

Remember, everyone else is looking to make friends too.

Remember it's okay to feel homesick

Moving to university is a huge life change, and it's completely normal to miss home.

Give yourself time to adjust. Stay in touch with family and friends but also give yourself the chance to build a new routine. If you're struggling, reach out to your Students' Union or university wellbeing team - they're there to help.

Your Cornwall adventure starts now

Moving to Cornwall is more than just changing address. It's the start of a new chapter full of new friends, opportunities and experiences you'll remember long after graduation.

Pack the essentials, keep an open mind and don't worry about getting everything perfect. The best parts of university are often the ones you never planned for.
