Fal Fem Society is delighted to present a Zoom call with Dr. Francesca Sobande, where she will be presenting her newest book 'The Digital Lives of Black Women in Britain'. Based on interviews, archival research, and media analysis, this session explores how media is implicated in Black women’s lives in Britain. It covers accounts of twentieth-century activism and television representations, as well as contemporary experiences of YouTube, Twitter, and social media. This talk focuses on how Black women in Britain are using digital tools in creative, collaborative, and societally impactful ways. Such discussion examines tensions between digital culture’s communal, counter-cultural, and commercial qualities.
At the end of the presentation there will be time for Dr. Sobande to answer any questions you may have (which can be submitted to a Google form beforehand when getting a ticket - a committee member will be able to ask these for you)! We will ask all participants to turn of their microphone and camera for the duration of the call. However, we might allow people at the end of the call to use the hand raising icon to ask questions directly to Dr. Sobande or one can always use the chat box.
Dr. Francesca Sobande is a lecturer in digital media studies at the School of Journalism, Media and Culture (Cardiff University). She is communications co-chair of the international Race in the Marketplace Research Network and her research has been published in journals such as European Journal of Cultural Studies, European Journal of Marketing, IPPR Progressive Review, Marketing Theory, Celebrity Studies, Critical Studies in Television, Communication, Culture & Critique, and Consumption, Markets & Culture. Francesca is author of The Digital Lives of Black Women in Britain (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) and is co-editor with Professor Akwugo Emejulu of To Exist is to Resist: Black Feminism in Europe (Pluto Press, 2019).
