About the event
Hey folks!
This weeks walk is this Saturday, along the South West Coast Path from Perranporth to Newquay. It's a 11 mile/ 17km walk that will likely take about 5 hours or so to actually walk- with spare time between to stop and have lunch, have a gander at some of the beaches, and potentially get a bite or drink to eat in Newquay.
Getting to Perranporth, and getting back from Newquay will mean relying on the public transport we have available in Cornwall. Thankfully, the U1 drops you off right next to Perranporth Beach, and also will take us back from our point at the Great Western Hotel in Newquay to Campus and The Moor respectively.
The plan is to get the U1 bus that arrives at Perranporth at 9:56- getting off at "N-bound Beach Road" in Perranporth at 9:55, and getting the U1 back in Newquay outside the Great Western Hotel at 16:34. (I'll provide photos of what the road looks like on WhatsApp, and also let the chat know when to get off. It will be the road that overlooks the beach, after the welcome to Perranporth sign :D) This will mean that people living in Falmouth will get the U1 to Perranporth @ 8:20 at the Moor, and people on campus will get on the same U1 @ 8:41. Aiming to get the bus back from Newquay at 16:34 accounts for issues with buses or route as there is another U1 at 17:34. In regards to bus tickets I recommend downloading the First Bus app and getting a 1 day Cornwall Network ticket for £5, which you can then activate and scan all day. For anyone without a phone I'm assuming you can just ask for this ticket, so don't worry, and if there's any queries you have regarding this let me know as I'll be happy to help.
While there's a Co-op/ Premier in Perranporth, and shops and eateries in Newquay, the coast path itself doesn't pass any places to eat and I'm not entirely confident on water stations either- so I'd recommend bringing both of these if you can, although I will be buying some food and spare water and taking it with me in case anyone needs. In regards to clothes, bar hiking boots/ comfortable boots to walk along a coastal, hilly and potentially muddy path, I'd recommend trousers, and bringing a coat/ warm layer. The former because some of the marram grass near the start is a bit overgrown and can scratch- the latter because the Met Office predicts light rain from 15:00 (fun!) Also, I'd definitely recommend binoculars if you have them, although I'll be happy to share mine now and then, provided you don't throw them off a cliff,
Thanks!
