About the event
This is a trip (subsidised for members) to the 16th century St Mawes castle in the Roseland peninsula, across the harbour of Carrick Roads from Falmouth. This castle, built by King Henry the Eighth, is part of a series of forts built at the time of the Reformation to defend Britain's southern coast from potential invasion by France or the Holy Roman Empire (roughly equivalent to today's Germany).
We will meet at the Prince of Wales Pier to get a ferry (lasting 20 minutes) to St Mawes, and there will be two options to get a ferry back to Falmouth at either 2:45pm or 4:45pm.
We encourage you to bring a packed lunch, but there is a shop that sells food items at the castle, and if you are done with the castle there is at least one other place to eat in St Mawes.
This event is ticketed, but comes out as slightly subsidised for members compared to the cost of going by yourself. Tickets are available until 5pm on Thursday the 23rd of October, to enable the society committee to arrange ferry and castle entry tickets. (If you are buying the ticket and have already bought membership, you may see a message about having bought membership rather than a message about buying the ticket; committee members have experienced this issue but you should have an email confirming you have bought a ticket. We are working to resolve this minor issue as soon as possible).
We hope to see you there for what should be a fun day out!
(No Cornish language knowledge is required for this event).
