About the event
National Wild Trials has been a highlight of uni for those who have attended and Southern Wild Trials promises to be just as exciting. It involves a pleasant car trip on Friday afternoon to yap with and get to know your team together before arriving at the location where you have some time to socialise with other universities. Following this, there is usually a mini teach from a sponsor of the event before eating dinner and going to sleep.
On the Saturday, you begin scenarios with your excellent team. These are usually set in a fictional setting; last year's was a tropical island where you have to familiarise yourself with the facilities of the island to plan your transfer to hospital. We usually have 4 roles; leader, yapper (to get a history and reassure patients), A-E person and an odd-jobs person (Obs, investigations etc). Throughout the day, you will rotate in your role so that everyone experiences each position a few times and learns how they can improve their teamwork.
In the afternoon, there is time to chill before a contest and joint event in the evening. The contest last year involved teams having to bake a themed cake which was then judged by a panel of not so experts before being offered to all attendees. There is usually a fancy dress theme for the evening (last years was fictional characters) and a shared game usually involving alcohol, jokes and a lot of laughing.
The Sunday morning will be a mass casualty scenario which is the most hectic but still very entertaining part of the trip with simulated members of the publiuc trying to interrupt your treatment as well as the general frenzy of 30 people trying to treat 20 casualties.
Following the mass casualty simulation, all teams gather around to hear the scores and winners as well as the winner of a secret, hidden prize. After all the excitment and action, its then time to head back and savour the experience.
We should stress that this is not exactly how Southern Wild Trials will work this year; hwoever, it will be very similar to this so if you are at all intrigued, we highly reccomend attending. Please aplpy for the team through this link.
We hope to see you there :)
