About the event
SSAGOK is excited to announce our first summer camp!
From Sunday 29th May to Wednesday 1st June 2022, we will be taking members on a Cornish adventure covering the coast of Lizard to Land’s End, and Carbis Bay.
This is our current itinerary, which may be subject to change:
Day 1: Start at 09:30 from Penryn Campus. We will arrive and set up camp. There will be three Scouting activities over the course of the afternoon, from a choice of Axe throwing, Archery, Jacob’s Ladder, Crate Stacking, Zip Wire or Climbing. Finally, there will be a campfire in the evening.
Day 2: In the morning, a trip to St Michael’s Mount at Marizion and by the afternoon a hike from Lizard to Kynance Cove. You can spend the late afternoon relaxing at the beach and visit the luxury gelato shop before returning to camp to eat and socialise.
Day 3: In the morning, there is a choice between visiting Land’s End (included in trip cost) or visiting Minack Theatre at Porthcurno (not included in trip cost). In the afternoon, we will spend time exploring St Ives with its multiple beaches and town. We will have fish and chips (or equivalent) by St.Ives’ harbour (not included in trip cost). The day will finish on St Ives’ coastline, watching the sunset over the sea.
Day 4: The morning will be spent packing down the campsite followed by a surprise activity. We will arrive in Falmouth early midafternoon. After returning luggage to our homes, there are optional drinks out in town to celebrate the end of a good time (not included in trip cost).
To attend, you will need to pay a non-refundable £20 deposit. The total trip cost is £55 but could lower depending on changing activity and fuel prices, or fundraising.
The cost of the trip is inclusive of:
Your accommodation for the entire stay
All meals, except Day 3’s St Ives Fish and Chips or any snacks/ drinks bought out.
All travel and parking
All activities, except the optional choice of visiting Minack Theatre and drinks in Falmouth
A trip badge
You have until WEDNESDAY 20TH APRIL to pay the deposit to confirm your place. There are only 18 places available on a first-come, first-served basis.
What is our accommodation?
We are staying at Trencrom Scout Campsite just outside Hayle. We will be using their outdoor sleeping shelter (sleeps 10) and extra tents (provided by the committee). The site has toilets, a shower and a communal building with a fitted kitchen so we can cook proper meals. There is a firepit and activities onsite that we will run (with a fully trained instructor).
What will I need to bring?
You will need to bring all the usual camping equipment, such as hiking shoes, a torch, a sleeping bag and mat and warm clothes. The society does not own camping equipment, but if you are struggling to gather appropriate equipment, we can support you in getting what you need for the trip. In early May, we will provide all attendees with a full itinerary list.
Will I need to bring spending money?
Yes, you will need to bring spending money to purchase snacks and drinks out and about, as well as Day 3’s meal in St Ives. A minimum of £20 should see you through the trip with ease. If you decide to visit Minack Theatre on Day 3, there will be tickets to purchase on the SU website closer to the time, as this activity will need to be prebooked.
Can my non-member friends come?
This is a member-only trip. If your friends would like to come, they will have to become a registered member (pay for membership) before they can pay a deposit.
I have an allergy/ intolerance/ dietary requirement. Will I be provided for?
We take all allergies/ intolerances and dietary requirements seriously. Upon paying your deposit we will ask you to disclose your dietary information. We will plan menus for each night offering a selection of meals for everyone to eat. Prior to the trip, you will be asked to select the meals you wish to eat, and food will be bought accordingly. Bronwyn (she/her) is Level 2 food certified through her training at Waitrose with catering experience, including providing meals for those will allergens and dietary requirements. You will be in safe hands, but any concerns at any point you are welcome to chat with her.
How can we lower the trip cost?
£55 is the result of SSAGOK already subsidising the trip cost by roughly £20 per person. If you wish to help lower the trip cost further, Minty (fundraising officer) will be in contact to run events to help raise money for the trip.
Are there any dates I should know about?
You have until Wednesday 20th April to pay your deposit. The outstanding trip balance will be expected by Friday 6th May 2022. The remaining trip cost will be added to the SU to pay once the deposit payment period is over. There will be a meeting on Wednesday 4th May, during normal society hours, in which we will ask all members to complete their food choices, provide an in-depth equipment list, vote for your preferred Day 1 activities, and for us to answer questions you may have/ provide updates. It is VERY important that you make that meeting.
If there are any changes, we will hold one last meeting on Wednesday 18th May which will be confirmed nearer the time.
