SU Help Refugees is a new Student-Led Volunteering Project on Penryn Campus, dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the charity Help Refugees. We aim to spread love, educate one another and ultimately build a community between students and local/international refugees.
As a refugee support group, we run fundraising events throughout the year that include jumble, bake and craft sales. We also run informative workshops such as film screenings, table talks on debated/current situations and guest speakers, providing students opportunities to engage with.
In our first year running, we managed to raise a total of £338.04 in the space of 5 months and secured a strong relationship with the local community support group, ‘Falmouth and Penryn Welcome Refugee Families’, where we had the opportunity to welcome a family to Falmouth earlier this year. This year we hope we can match our contribution and raise more to support groups where the need is greatest.
One of our long term goals is to organise a trip to Calais, to work with grassroots projects - such as Care4Calais - responding to the refugee crisis in Northern France. This is an exciting opportunity and we hope to see more of you join us!
