On Thursday 22nd October, Tom Jackson, SU Surf Radio Station Manager, was nominated and shortlisted as "best newcomer" at the national Student Radio Awards; a prestigious annual awards ceremony run by the Student Radio Association and supported by BBC Sounds and Global. Winners will be revealed this Friday 6th November on the Student Radio Association's Facebook page, via livestream.

The Student Radio Association (SRA) are a network of student radio stations across the country that provide links to industry, training, support and more to student radio stations. Surf Radio is Falmouth and Penryn's student radio station, broadcasting online 24/7 providing information, entertainment, and news that's relevant and accessible to the diverse student community here in Cornwall.  The Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union society launched in September 2019 and has quickly grown to host a wide variety of content championing the work and passions of the students living and studying in Cornwall.

This nomination recognises the hard work put into Surf Radio over their first year of broadcasting and shows that they are certainly here to stay. The Student Radio Awards are a big deal in Student Radio, having been the career starting place of many big names in the industry (most notably Greg James, current host of the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show). It is an astounding achievement for a radio station so new to the game to have already bagged their first national award nomination.

Tom Jackson, Station Manager of Surf Radio, said:

"I'm absolutely blown away with this nomination, it's an honour to have been picked out at the SRA's and an amazing achievement for Surf Radio who have only been on air for one year!"

Rosie Lea, Societies Coordinator at Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union, said:

“This is such an incredible achievement for Surf Radio, who have worked so hard this year. Students really love what Surf Radio are doing, and their listener base has grown to 16,560 people between July and September. This really goes to show what hard work and dedication results in and the committee should be so proud in all they have achieved! We're really proud of Surf Radio, and it’s amazing to see industry professionals recognising how brilliant they are too!”
