Return to activities

Amelia Banton, SU President Student Experience 2020/21

Since the publication of the roadmap, I've been working with the Student Opps team and the Universities to understand how we can safely and legally return to activities in line with the Government Roadmap.

Last Friday, we contacted our sports clubs and societies to let them know what activity can happen when, starting with a return of outdoor sports on 29 March in line with NGB guidance, and societies in groups of up to six outside.

The most important thing about activities is that they happen safely, and we’ll be asking more information from group committees to ensure this is the case. We'll be asking for updated risk assessments, so, if you are on a committee, please help us to do this by working with the Student Opps team. We’ll also be making sure venues used by groups have their own Covid-19 secure plans to keep you safe and making sure that group event capacities are in line with government guidelines. All of these processes are in place to allow you to return to your group’s activity safely and bring student communities back together.

Next year, hopefully restrictions will have eased and so there will be lots more activity, but in order for this to happen our groups all need new committees! Join a club or society now so you can be part of creating a great student experience in the next academic year (see the full list of live Elections at the bottom of this news piece). I joined the History Society committee in my second year having not been a part of the society in my first year and it was one of the best decisions I made at university – I had so much fun arranging events until the pandemic stopped me in my tracks. Look out for Instagram takeovers from some of the Part-Time Officers soon who will have lots more info about all the fabulous things they’ve got up in their various committee roles.

One of the hardest things about the pandemic has been the lack of human interaction and I have shared your frustrations this year as persistent lockdowns have hampered previous attempts to get your activities back up and running. I hope that in the months ahead you can all get back to the sports and societies that you love.
