Priority Update - Wellbeing

president student experiencepresidents blog

Hear from Aisha on her priority: Amplifying the voices and improving the wellbeing of neurodivergent and culturally diverse students.

Aisha’s priority this year is to amplify the voices and improve the wellbeing of underrepresented students.

Improving the experience of neurodivergent students

To achieve this, Aisha is:

  • Scheduled focus groups

  • Worked to create a survey to collect more feedback

  • Worked to create research on what students have said in the past

  • Connecting with stakeholders

  • Helped run the neurodivergent collective, providing key insights to the experience of these students

  • Setting up voting bins to provide a simple anonymous feedback system

  • Aim to use the research and feedback gathered to campaign for the university to change their policy on neurodiverse training and awareness.

Raising the voices of our ethnically diverse students to provide more representation and support.

To achieve this, Aisha is:

  • Completing research on how York SU was able to get their university to employ a BAME practitioner

  • Looking at creating a peer-to-peer support system, in which ethnically diverse students can connect and share experiences and advice with one another.

  • Looking at building our community by providing the opportunity for both small and larger scale events such as a culturally diverse movie nights and potentially group outings to the panto at Christmas for example.

  • Setting up scheduled times in which students can come and to talk to her in the week, ask questions, share any concerns or give feedback.
