Priority Update: Student representatives actively support tran students’ right to exist as themselv

presidentspresidents blog

   What’s happening?
The Priority:
SU to actively and vocally stand up for trans students and lobby the universities and FX
Plus to support, advocate, and create space for our trans students.
Context:
The recent UK supreme court ruling concerning Transgender women is horrifying, and
has left the LGBTQ+ community in a state of shock, rage, and danger. This ruling
removes the rights trans women have, something which they fought so hard for. It also
sets a dangerous precedent of the removal of other individual's rights.
What we’ve achieved
Key Outcomes:
• The SU joined the 678 UK Businesses that signed an open letter to the UK
Government opposing the EHRC's proposed Code of Practice.
• Joined the trans+ solidarity alliance a trans-led not for profit driving positive
change for trans+ people across the UK.
• The SU received specialist training on trans inclusion from Intercom Trust. An
LGBT+ led charity, dedicated to improving wellbeing and inclusion across the
Southwest.
• Wrote to Jayne Kirkham the Labour Member of Parliament representing the
constituency of Truro and Falmouth and Perran Moon the Labour Member of
Parliament representing the constituency of Camborne, Redruth, and Hayle
requesting that they lobby for the updated EHRC Code of Practice face
Parliamentary Scrutiny.
• Asked our MPs to write to the Minister for Women and Equalities and the
Prime Minister, asking them to ensure that any new EHRC Code of
Practice laid before Parliament is subject to:
• full scrutiny
• meaningful debate
• a free vote by MPs
• We also asked that they support any motion tabled in Parliament
objecting to a Code that infringes on human rights standards.

• Secured a meeting with Jayne Kirkham in the new year to work together to share
knowledge and discuss how we can work together to represent and protect our
shared trans+ community.
• The Gender Expression Fund providing financial aid to our trans+ students
opened in late October.
• We are working on series of exciting gender affirming events to celebrate trans+
joy:
• Gender affirming makeup workshops
• Pride Prom
• Recently secured 20 binders
• The SU has been engaging with the trans+ community through a series of
collectives and meetings with key groups of the local trans+ community such as
pride soc, intercom trust and the Fal Trans Collective. Through this engagement
the SU has been ensuring that trans voices are not only being heard but are also
at the centre of shaping their rights.
• The SU has been working with the University of Exeter to make sure that trans+
inclusion is the core focus of their EDI policies.
• The president's trans support vouchers provided financial support to 10s of
students during the summer.
• The SU proudly raised the trans flag and other LBGTQ+ flags in the SU to
physically show their ongoing commitment to the trans community. The SU
continues to give away dozens of free pronoun badges with many SU staff all
wearing pronoun pins to create a more inclusive environment.
• The SU has been in talks with numerous staff and departments such as the
career zone to ensure a high standard of trans inclusion. The SU is ongoing
meetings with the Universities to work towards a streamlined name changing
process. Exeter have since declared they will use preferred names when calling
graduates to the stage during graduation.

Why this matters
Trans rights are under threat with the current EHRC code of practice, it is important to
support our community, celebrate them and be there for them during this difficult time.
Everyone deserves to live how they wish within Falmouth and the wider community,
these are our friends, family members, colleagues and fellow students and they are
IMPORTANT!
