The Priority:

Making sure both harms and benefits of AI are discussed in the curriculum with consistent regulations across departments.

Context:

AI usage is becoming increasingly common across the universities. Two student proposals, ‘Reducing AI Topics in Lectures and Seminars’ and ‘Let’s Put a Stop to Generative AI’ backed by popular campaigns highlighted the importance of making sure AI is on the SUs agenda. One proposal highlighted the need to open up a conversation around A.I and its consequences, not just 'positives' - and putting a stop to its wide use. The other emphasised a need to pull back on the amount of lectures and seminars we have on AI, especially in the arts courses and for the damage AI causes to be acknowledged and explained.

What has the SU achieved this year?

Key Outcomes:

  • Attendees voted to merge two other proposals ‘Reducing AI Topics in Lectures and Seminars’ and ‘Let’s Put a Stop to Generative AI’ into one proposal focusing on making sure both harms and benefits of AI are discussed in the curriculum with consistent regulations across departments.

  • This passed as a union priority and there will be future work with students to shape what the proposal looks like.

  • We've been in contact with the proposers and have shared feedback resource provided by ofs to them to feedback their thoughts on a larger scale.

By the Numbers:

  • Discussed during Forum 5 summary - we had 53 attendees online and in-person

Why this matters:

Students are rightfully worried about the universities directions WITH AI and calling for it to have greater discussion and regulation. AI doesn't just have a massive impact on our students but a massive impact on the planet they will inherit to. As AI continues to grow in popularity, we find ourselves on a tipping point in which it is crucial to act.
