My name is Jude and I am a third year Geography student with a genuine passion for connecting our diverse community across Geography, Environmental Science, Geography & Geology, and Marine Science. As your Subject Chair, my top priority is to ensure every student’s voice is heard and that our academic experience continues to improve.
I chose to become a rep because I wanted to make a positive difference by representing everyone’s experiences and ideas. Being a rep means I can help turn feedback into real changes and build a stronger sense of community among students. It’s rewarding to know I can give back and help shape the journey we’re all on together.
I’m dedicated to championing open, honest conversation between students and staff. I actively listen, advocate for your concerns, and seek collaborative solutions to enhance our learning environment. Whether it’s improving feedback, resources, or ways for CGES students to connect and collaborate, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
My favourite module on my course was the second-year Geography, Environment and Society Field Course, which investigates the cultural, ecological, and physical landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. I was in the group focusing on cultural landscapes, spending time in Edinburgh and Tomintoul, on the edge of Cairngorms National Park. This immersive trip allowed me to explore how people interact with and shape their environment firsthand. The balance between lectures, fieldwork, and living together in hostels made the experience both academically enriching and memorable, giving me a deeper appreciation of landscape diversity and community connections. The combination of independent study and practical experience made the whole process feel meaningful and clearly connected to the world beyond campus.
Beyond my role as Subject Chair, I love exploring Cornwall’s stunning landscapes—there’s nothing quite like winding down by the coast or discovering new nature trails. Studying in Cornwall means being surrounded by inspiring landscapes and a creative, close-knit campus community. There’s so much to explore—beaches, countryside, and history are never far away, and that balance makes the student experience here truly unique. When I’m not studying, I’m fascinated by Scottish land and history, especially stories of the Highland Clearances and places like the Glenlivet Estate. You’ll also find me taking part in Student Union activities and enjoying the creativity and energy of campus life.
If I could offer one tip to new students, it would be to make the most of every opportunity to get involved—both academically and socially. Building connections early with your peers and staff not only enriches your learning experience but also creates a support network that will help you navigate challenges and enjoy university life to the fullest.
I look forward to meeting many of you, learning what matters most to our community, and helping shape a thriving, inclusive environment for us all. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with your ideas, suggestions, or concerns—this campus belongs to all of us, and I’m here to make sure your journey is supported and rewarding. Let’s work together and make a real impact!”
