Read Marketa's updates in the run up to 2024-25's final Student Forum on 13th May.
Headphones for Library
We have successfully lobbied FX Plus library team to buy more noise cancelling headphones off the back of the ‘Make a Change’ to have more neurodiverse provisions on campus.
Scholars Fund
We have applied for food poverty funding via the Exeter Scholars’ Fund to hopefully have contingency and longevity with the pantry, soup Fridays, breakfast clubs, and termly food bags for next academic year and beyond.
SOS UK
I attended the Students Organising for Sustainability summit in Liverpool where I learned about decolonising conservation and the concept of ‘green grabbing’. We also discussed the concept that there is no such thing as ‘green development’ and what this means in a society operating under an economic model that requires growth.
NUS UK
This month I attended the NUS UK conference where NUS delivered a talk on ‘Tackling the Far Right’. Sabbs from across the country discussed the potential root causes of ever more polarised opinions and beliefs amongst students and ultimately concluded this is likely due to socio-economic injustice, decentralised platforms and misinformation on social media.
I have since been in touch with Gemma from the multifaith chaplaincy and the SU Communities team to hold social events and ‘Movies and Meanings’ nights where students may choose to be educated on social and cultural differences, and hopefully establish a platform of mutual understanding and respect.
Meat Free Mondays
Unfortunately, I am still waiting for FX Plus to review the sales data from the meat free Mondays’ trial – so we are yet to find out if the trial has been successful.
Rep Sustainability Training
I have collaborated with Jake Causley, Falmouth’s Sustainability Officer, to deliver the rep sustainability training, facilitating conversations and plugging pathways for reps to work with the SU and Sabbs such as running campaigns, and working towards more healthy and environmentally just changes.
