Flirtin' Falmouth - A Student Project Fund

Flirtin’ Falmouth was a Falmouth and Exeter student dating show that took place on April 24th at the chapel lecture theatre on Penryn campus. The show was made as the main assignment for the second year Esports & Livestreaming course’s Esports Events module. The event capped up the months of preparation and collaboration across multiple departments across Falmouth University.

Our initial goal was to put on a show that people would look at and think “You know what? That seems like a laugh, let's do it”. So, when we decided to create Flirtin’ Falmouth, we realised we need to have as big of a community reach as possible. Which is when we realised we needed help from The SU.

We first spoke to them about the logistics of how we could possibly run an event like this, and they were able to point us in the direction of the Student Project Fund. From there we were able to work closely with The SU as they advised us on the best space to use for the show, how to get constants on board, and what the show needed to be for us to meet our audience where they are. Once we had found the venue we wanted to work on, The SU helped us get in contact with FXPlus and offered to help us with all the risk assessments and other documents required to book the space.

The biggest help from The SU was their support in marketing the event. We spoke with the marketing team, and they talked us through all the things they can offer. As well as what the best marketing devices for us to use to reach the most students. They offered to share our marketing on their social media, put up posters for us, and sent out our sign-up form in their newsletter. Without The SU’s marketing, we would not have gotten half of our signups or the thousands of views our posts garnered.  It was clear from talking to our contestants and students around campus that the platform The SU had given us had put Flirtin’ Falmouth in the minds of hundreds of students across campus. We managed 80 attendees to the event and as of writing this over 750 people have watched the livestreamed video of the event. Without the marketing support of The SU, we would never have reached this number of people.

The Student Project Fund helped out massively with the little things. It allowed us to pay for all the posters we put up. We used it to buy a few extra cables that we needed to make the livestreamed event possible, and it allowed us to buy a few extra things like flowers, chocolates for our contestants and cue cards for our hosts. All those things on their own aren’t very expensive, but those little expenses together add up to a cost that we wouldn’t have been able to afford without the Student Project Fund. So overall it just allowed us to add the finishing touches and extra polish and allowed us to increase our production value just that extra bit more.

Overall, Flirtin’ Falmouth was a huge success, and we reached way more people than we ever could have dreamed of, and we as a course created a show that we are all proud of and would love to do again. All of this is because of the help of The SU and the Student Project Fund.
