Enjoying Bonfire Night Safely

Bonfire Night is just around the corner, and we know lots of you are looking forward to celebrating! However, please remember that bonfires and fireworks are not allowed on campus or nearby beaches.

These rules are in place to keep everyone safe and protect our local environment and community — so we really appreciate your help in following them.

Why bonfires and fireworks aren’t allowed:
On campus and beaches:

  • Local byelaws prohibit fires and fireworks — breaking them can lead to fines, and many areas are monitored by CCTV.

  • Hot ashes can stay dangerous for up to 48 hours and could harm children, pets, or wildlife.

  • Leftover debris like nails or screws from burnt wood can cause injuries.

  • Uncontrolled fires or fireworks can quickly become dangerous, especially in busy areas.

On beaches specifically:

  • Fireworks launched without proper setup can veer off course and hit homes, businesses, or people.

  • Beaches are popular on Bonfire Night — one misfired firework could cause serious injury.

What to do instead:
Why not head to a licensed bonfire or fireworks event instead? They’re professionally run, safe, and still a great way to enjoy the night with friends.
