About the event

It’s A Small World [4/4] - Wolfwalkers (2020) dir. Tomm Moore, Ross Stewart

In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when she saves a wild native girl, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

We’re concluding our trip around the world of animation with this gem from the makers of  ‘The Secret of Kells’ and ‘Songs of the Sea’. As is often the case with Cartoon Saloon, Wolfwalkers is a reflection on conflict in a very particular fashion. While it is dealing with the troubles, and the civil war, and the whole idea of division in Ireland, it does so in a way that reaches prior to that, delving into irish-prehistory and mythology that is as rich as it has been neglected. By returning close to home, we’re also encouraging ourselves to celebrate Irish culture and remind ourselves of its distinction from its colonising neighbour state, with whom it's all too often lumped in with.
