About the event

Chrysalis [1/3] - if…. (1968) dir. Lindsay Anderson

At a boarding school, social hierarchy reigns supreme and power remains in the hands of distant, ineffectual teachers and vicious prefects in the Upper Sixth. But three Lower Sixth students, Mick Travis, Wallace and Johnny decide on a shocking course of action to redress the balance of privilege once and for all.

Our introductory season, that we’re calling Chrysalis, is all about actors and directors just before their breakouts, as they're still developing who and what they are as filmmakers; just like uni might become such a chrysalis for us.

And kicking us off is the ’69 Plame d’Or winner if…., a brilliantly surreal burst of rebellion and violence that hangs Che Guevara posters in an English boarding school. if.... takes the traditional school rebellion film and soaks it in nitroglycerin. It was Malcolm McDowell’s performance in this film that caught Stanley Kubrick's attention to cast him in A Clockwork Orange (1971).
