Event information

It is now virtually certain that 2023 will be the warmest year ever recorded by humans. Heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires across the world are examples of the increasingly dangerous future that awaits us. Join George Monbiot as he discusses the roles and responsibilities that universities have in addressing the unfolding climate and ecological crisis. The format of the event with be a discussion with Global Systems Institute Assistant Director James Dyke after which audience members will be invited to ask their questions directly to George.

George Monbiot is a best-selling author, environmental activist and Guardian columnist. His works include Feral: Rewilding the land, sea and human life and Heat: how to stop the planet burning. George has made several viral videos, including How Wolves Change Rivers (over 40 million views) and Nature Now, co-presented with Greta Thunberg (over 60 million views). In 2022, George was awarded the Orwell Prize for Journalism. George’s latest book, Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet, explains why farming is ‘the world's greatest cause of environmental destruction’, drawing on astonishing advances in soil ecology to explore pioneering ways to grow more food with less farming.
