The Falmouth and Exeter Debating Union is founded upon the principles of Hegelian Dialetics, which states that there are three positions in a dialogue: (1) Thesis, (2) Antithesis, and (3) Synthesis. We teach members that one can prevail in a debate not only by proving a Thesis or Antithesis beyond reasonable doubt, but also by arguing for a logical and rational Synthesis of the two opposing positions. This emphasizes the multifaceted nature of real world debates, and the plurality of human thought.

Consequently, we encourage intellectual and philosophical diversity, and are proud to encompass a wide range of political and social views to generate robust yet respectful debates. Our society caters to all levels of debating skill, whether you’re a complete beginner or seasoned veteran. Everyone, of all views, backgrounds, and abilities, is welcome in the Falmouth and Exeter Debating Union!
