FXU Awards Ceremony & Winners 2017

Congratulations to all our winners from the FXU Awards 2017! Check out the winners and shortlisted nominees here.

On Thursday 25th May, students from Falmouth University and the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campuses celebrated a fantastic year of achievement at their annual awards ceremony.

Held at the newly refurbished Fox Café at Falmouth Campus, the ceremony recognises the efforts of students across the full range of FXU activities, from fundraising and volunteering to sporting triumphs, sustainable projects and academic representation.

The evening was sponsored by Penryn Campus Sports Centre and hosted by elected Students’ Union Presidents, Tom Murray-Richards (FXU President Exeter), Chris Slesser (FXU President Falmouth), Alexa Webster (FXU President Community and Welfare) and Amanda Chetwynd-Cowieson (FXU President Student Experience).  The night also showcased student talents through performance-based interludes from choirs Viva Voce and The Chorus.

Students were dressed to impress and were given the opportunity to mingle with VIP guests and presenters, including Deputy Penryn Mayor, Councillor Chaz Wenmoth, Falmouth Mayor, Councillor Grenville Chappel, university representatives, Rob Lambert from the National Union of Students (NUS) and athlete David Follett.

For the first time, the ceremony included a celebration of students who have achieved the most volunteering hours. The V Team is FXU’s volunteering scheme that helps students build and record their volunteer journey, enabling them to find their ideal activity, log their hours, record employability skills gained, access training and work towards a Bronze, Silver or Gold award in volunteering. The scheme takes into account volunteering in the community, club and society committee roles and student representation positions. Students who achieved Gold were presented with their Award during the ceremony, recognising their outstanding 200+ volunteering hours.

Winners were presented with unique, hand-crafted trophies designed by Kelly Doidge, Interior Design student from Falmouth University. This year’s winner of the Daniel Palmer Award for the most outstanding contribution to the student experience was Kieran Cutting for his role as Community Officer. Kieran has dedicated his time at university to deepening community engagement. He was part of the creation of ‘Penrynopoly’, a community project aiming to engage local long-term residents and students. As the FXU Community Officer on the Leadership Team he has also encouraged students to get involved and have a positive impact on community decisions.

Amanda Chetwynd-Cowieson, FXU President Student Experience, thinks the awards are the perfect way to celebrate student achievement: "The FXU awards are one of the absolute highlights in our year and are a fantastic opportunity for FXU and both Universities to show our appreciation for everything that students do across our campuses. It never fails to amaze us just how many voluntary hours students put into all that we offer; from running sports clubs to being an academic rep, raising thousands of pounds for local charities and running unique events for everyone to enjoy - the sheer volume of activity going on is astonishing. This year has been utterly fantastic for students and FXU, so everyone shortlisted and particularly all of our awards winners should be truly proud of what they have achieved.”
