Your Students' Union, what is it like to work there?

Here is a short write up of my experience spending a week on placement with FXU.

FXUJobWork

During my placement with FXU (19th – 23rd November 2019) I felt like an official member of the team. It is a very supportive and inclusive place to work where staff at every level are listened to and appreciated.

This was a beneficial week to be a part of FXU as a wide variety of events have recently occurred or were scheduled to take place including The Big Rep Meeting, Societies Forum and the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

I have been involved in meetings and discussions where affective solutions to student concerns are considered, spent time sorting and reporting on feedback from the t Big Rep Meeting (which was incredibly informative) and visited the Knowledge Spa in Truro to connect with medical students and ensure they feel supported by the students union.

On the third day of the placement I was invited to attend a meeting with the liberation committee, with diversity and inclusion being an area that I am personally passionate about, this was incredibly uplifting and engaging for me. The committee this year are focused on raising their profile within the university, organising various events and campaigns that support the various minority groups involved and supporting FXU societies which represent these minority groups. I was heavily involved in these discussions, suggesting new ideas and giving feedback on the committee’s plans from my perspective as the current president of the Don’t DisAbility Society.

One of my main motivations for completing a placement with FXU was to understand the office environment and roles of the presidents as I have been considering running for president myself after graduation. This was insightful and encouraging and as a result I am looking forward to campaigning in 2020!

Before completing my placement with FXU, I didn’t realise the extent to which FXU are connected with students in area from supporting academic resources to improving the student’s social lives and work/life balance. The FXU are integral part of providing an enjoyable and worth-while student experience. Their team includes specialists in many areas including project management, finance, marketing and more.
