Student Community Wardens win Special Recognition Award

On Monday 14 January, the Student Community Warden team attended the Harbour Lights 2019 Community Hero Awards, where they were presented with a Special Recognition Award.

The team have only been working together for less than five months but have already made a huge difference to the local community and were warmly celebrated by attendees of the generously sponsored Harbour Lights event.

Richard Gates, Falmouth Town Manager, presented the award on behalf of the panel and highlighted the valuable work the Wardens have been doing, including the voluntary hours they had commited to their roles above and beyond their remit. Work includes encouraging residents to improve waste and recycling management, helping residents to access support, a food bank donation event, fundraising for charity, litter picks, sharing citizenship advice and signposting and supporting residents to escalate and resolve concerns. Over their time in post, the Wardens have collectively dedicated over 400 hours of work into community matters, some of which has been voluntary and done out of pure passion for their role.

In receiving this recognition, the Wardens have been spurred on to do more good and plan to invest their monetary prize in new campaigns and ideas”

On Sunday 27 January, the Wardens are working in collaboration with Falmouth Civic Society and The Beach Clean Society to run a Community Street Clean. All are welcome and encouraged to support the event, meeting at 11am on Falmouth Moor. Participants will be walking from the Moor, litter picking along the way in residential areas, finishing at the Falmouth University sign on Woodlane. Afterwards, an optional beach clean will take place for those who would like to continue. Equipment will be provided, but sturdy footwear and warm waterproof clothes are advised.
