Yasmine Fosu discusses her time fencing and how the sports bursary scheme has helped.
Hello! I’m Yasmine. I’m in my third and final year studying Politics and International Relations with French, and a sports bursary recipient.
I’ve competed internationally in fencing since I was 13, and narrowly missed qualification to the Rio 2016 Olympics, but I’ve got my sights set on Tokyo (so long as Covid doesn’t ruin it!). I was originally a foilist, but when I was 14 I switched to epee and couldn’t love my sport more, but every now-and-again I’ll still pick up a foil just for fun.
I’ve been fortunate enough that I was offered a position of Ambassador of Youth and Sport for Ghana and now I get to meet and speak to so many interesting and inspirational young athletes around the globe. When I’m not fencing you can find me pouring pints behind the bar or playing drums in my band
Fencing is a beautiful, interesting, and challenging sport and I’d urge anyone who’s interested to take the opportunity to try it out!
