About this event
We are delighted to be hosting a series of talks in association with The Writers Collective to coincide with The Falmouth Book Festival in October and have invited some of the Local Authors we stock in our little shop to give a short talk about themselves and their books as well as sign some books for you all.
The talks take place on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th October (between 10-6 pm) and our schedule includes...
Sun 16th
10:00h Des Hannigan - to be confirmed
Des Hannigan lives on the Atlantic coast of the Land’s End Peninsula, Cornwall; a home from home for a northerly Scot. He has been a journalist, travel writer and photographer for over thirty years, first as a news reporter for Cornish newspapers and the Press Association and latterly as a writer for publishers such as Lonely Planet and AA Publishing. He is the author or joint author of over fifty books about travel in a number of countries including Britain, Ireland, Northern Europe, Spain, Greece, Canada, and Pakistan and has written widely about Cornwall’s coast and countryside.
Des is now retired and is incapable of not scribbling. His latest books The Almost Island and The Long Deep feature published work and new writing about the far western outliers of Britain, from the coast and cliffs of Cornwall’s Land’s End Peninsula to the offshore waters of the Western Approaches and the Isles of Scilly; an authentic view of the world below the cliff edge and beyond the beaches. Both books tell of dramas at sea, climbing on remote cliffs, and explorations of the wilder reaches of the Cornish coast in the company of fishermen, coastguards, lifeboatmen, rock climbers, writers and artists and the most unpredictable player of all, the Atlantic Ocean.
11:00h Cathy Mayes
Cathy was brought up in North Cornwall on the family farm. Together she and her sisters had ponies on loan during the winter months and later had horses of their own. They spent many hours galloping across beaches and enjoying the fun of attending Pony Club Camp on Bodmin Moor.
Having left school, Cathy trained to teach riding before starting college. During that time, she became groom to the Junior Equestrian Team GB. She enjoys teaching and has supported many people over the years of all abilities. She has thoroughly enjoyed helping her grandson, Matt, with his first pony, Pandora.
Matt and Pandora, White Horses and Sunbeams.
12:00h Scott Jones
Scott Jones was born in Redruth, Cornwall in 1972. He grew up in Camborne, before he joined the Royal Navy in 1991, serving for 22 years, before leaving in January 2013, as a Petty Officer. In 2007, he started to prepare for life outside of the forces by qualifying as a Gym Instructor. When he is not in the gym his spare time is spent, with his three children who were a great source of inspiration for his writing. Although Scott has been a keen 'jotter of words and ideas for many years, Secret Of The Dark Woods was his debut novel and The Curse of Kaninjanga Island his second.
13:00h Eve Bourrat
Seb and Polly Planet on their Ocean Quest was written by Michelle Cassar and beautifully illustrated by local creative talent Eve Bourrat.
The problem of plastic pollution has made dramatic headlines. It's a daunting subject that can feel overwhelming, even to adults. So Michelle and Eve formed a partnership to highlight the problems in a magical children's book adventure. In this fun-filled book, the strong, compassionate, female superhero Polly Planet (plus narwhals, albatrosses and a leatherback turtle) opens Seb’s eyes to the challenges facing the ocean from plastic pollution and teaches her ways on how to overcome them.
