About the event
Shakira Martin, President of the National Union of Students, is coming to Penryn Campus on Friday 23 November to talk with you about her journey of overcoming adversity to become the first black female President of NUS.
Come and hear her story about how she accidentally walked into a student representative, running to be the women’s officer at her students’ union, and going on to attend her first NUS conference where she ran to be on the further education committee, and then black students’ committee and the women’s committee, before deciding to run for Vice President Further Education and, eventually, President.
This event is open to everyone and is an opportunity to talk with the National President about what she’s doing to give you a voice at the very top, especially around NUS’s work on the Poverty Commission, the Black Attainment Gap, and the marketisation of higher education because, as Shakira says, ‘it’s not just about getting in, it’s about getting on’.
This event is open to everyone. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.
