Black History Month

It’s Black History Month!

A message from Charlotte Agnew (President Welfare & Inclusivity) and Ellie Ricks (President Student Experience):

"You may hear the Presidents talk a lot about representation. That is because, as your student representatives, it’s critical and essential for fair democracy that every single student gets to have their say. In the past, the voices of black students did not get equal opportunities, which is why dedicating time, such as this October, is so important. It’s a time for us to step back and promote the voices of black students and staff, while allowing them to use their dedicated space to share stories and enable us all to re-connect. We need to catch up with history to highlight the achievements of black figures that were previously overlooked.

It’s also important that the SU President Team recognises their own white privilege and commits to using their platforms to elevate the experiences and voices of the black student community. Not only during Black History month, but all year round.

If you are doing anything to celebrate this month, please get in touch with us E.Ricks@thesu.org.uk / Charlotte.Agnew@thesu.org.uk so that The SU can support and officially recognise your events!"
