This talk focuses on the mysterious love affair between the modernist novelists Carl Van Vechten and Ronald Firbank, who exchanged over 50 flirtatious letters between 1922 and 1924. Their almost affair shaped their own writing and helped to define 'camp' in literature, but it was lost in history until Kate Hext found their misfiled letters in the New York Public Library in 2016. As she looks at the literary importance of their relationship, this talk reconstructs their poignant relationship using their letters, alongside other archival materials and framed by the cultural history of the early 1920s.
